Yahoo Question November 2009:
I've spent loads on different pillows and still suffer from neck and upper back/shoulder pain when I wake up. I've even got a memory foam jobbie but that is probably one of the worst culprits. My chiropracter says that I need a proper pillow to prevent pain returning so I'm looking for advice on how to find the best pillow for me. Thanks.Buying the right neck pillow for “you” is based on a lot of factors. It can be a tough choice. For some people a memory foam pillow is the best, for others a fiber support pillow is the most comfortable. It truly can be trial and error. But instead of just filling up your closet with pillow after pillow try to narrow it down as to what you exactly need.
For example, if you suffer from neck pain including numbness and tingling into the hands and fingers, and maybe have been diagnosed with a disc bulge at C5-C6- perhaps a
traction pillow will help you.
If you are looking for a
travel pillow, then a “U” shaped pillow would serve you best. The travel pillows come in fiber or foam.

If your chiropractor has suggested a specific pillow, they are probably referring to a support pillow such as a
linear gravity support neck pillow. It has two neck rolls on it that will support your neck while you are sleeping. Choose the best side for you. Similar to taking a towel and rolling it up- that is what a linear gravity neck pillow feels under your neck. Another advantage of this pillow is that it comes in 3 sizes:
small, medium and large. Choosing a neck pillow that is proportionate to your height and weight is extremely important. A king size pillow for a king size bed is not the right option. Maybe for a decorative pillow, but not for a sleeping pillow. You want to support your head and neck, not make your condition worse. -
