I’m Looking for a Softer, Gentler Neck Pillow with Good Neck Support...

We get this request regularly: "I would like a softer gentler pillow, but I still want to have good support for my neck"- the next statement is usually, " I have already tried the Brookstone Memory Foam pillow and the temperpedic, and those were too hard for me"

A very popular newer pillow of ours is the Cervical Alignment Pillow. It’s a very soft and gentle pillow that is good for side and back sleeping. The Dimensions of the Neck Pillow are 24”x 16” (61cm x 41 cm). The lobe or neck roll on this pillow is available in three sizes: 5 inch, 6 inch, or 7 inch neck lobe. Fitting Guide Instructions:

1. Have someone else measure the person using the pillow, this will ensure the best fit possible
2. The person who will be using the pillow should stand up straight.
3. Place the rounded edge of the sizing guide on the nape of the person’s neck.
4. Imagine a vertical line extending upward from the edge of the person’s shoulder blades. The flat edge of the sizing guide should be along this line.
5. To help visualize the vertical line, let the remaining guides hang down against the person’s back.
6. If the guides rest gently against the back, the fit is correct. If the guides hang away from the back, try the next smaller size.

Alternately, you can also use the following guidelines to determine the right size: You can measure from the bottom of your ear to your shoulder with a standard ruler or tape measure to determine which size provides the best personal fit for you.

• Measurement of 4" or less, use the 5” Lobe
• Measurement of 4 to 5" = use the 6” Lobe
• Measurement of 6" or more= Use the 7" Lobe)

Who is the Cervical Alignment Pillow for? This pillow is great for anyone who is looking for a softer neck pillow but needs the support in their neck at the same time. Imagine taking a soft towel, rolling it up and placing it under your neck while sleeping. If you have degeneration in your neck, specifically bone spurs, this pillow will work well for you. Also great for patients who have a herniated or bulging disc in their neck, it can provide a gentle streth while sleeping. What we have found is that everyone is a little different, and what pillow works for one person may not be the same for the next. The Cervical Alignment Pillow has been a nice addition for those that like a softer pillow that still gives support. It also allows you to choose the size of the neck roll.

How Can I Stop Sleeping on my Stomach?

What is the best sleeping position for you? I get this question a lot and have written a post on this in the past on Neck Pain Support blog. The best method is to make sure that every night you start out on your back or side. Keep in mind that sleeping on your side, but tilted toward your front is still side sleeping. Stomach sleeping is when you’re flat on your stomach or more flat than you are on your side. When you sleep this way it puts a lot of stress on your neck because you have to turn it to the side to breathe. This done over a long period of time will wreak havoc on your neck alignment and neck muscles.

Start out on your back or side, be patient because it’ll take some time to get used to or at least until you are comfortable enough to fall asleep. Always be conscious of this too. If you awake and find yourself on your stomach, roll over. You have to mentally train yourself to stop stomach sleeping.

Two pillows that may help you do this are the tear drop pillow and the Cervical Linear Traction neck pillow. The tear drop pillow acts more like a body pillow- it will give you stomach pressure and warmth that you’re used to. It also is long enough that on your side will give you pelvis support. The traction neck pillow has a built in “V” for a gentle neck traction, however, this also works very well to hold you in position on your back.

So the key to get off your stomach is to change your sleeping habits. If you need help use one of the above pillows to help you shift from stomach sleeping to side or back sleeping.

What Is A Yoga Pillow?

A Yoga Pillow is a term that is sometimes used synonymously with a neck pillow; that is when you are talking about the neck anyways.  Technically you can call a meditation pillow you sit on a yoga pillow too.  Mainly it's a term used for a relaxation type pillow.  Yoga promotes relaxation, muscle tension release, health and good posture which is what a good neck pillow does.

So when it comes to sleeping there is nothing better than a good neck pillow or yoga neck pillow.
