The jury's out on this one. After a number of study's they've shown how alcohol actually reduces your sleep; at least good sleep anyway. You want to get R.E.M. sleep, deep, restful sleep. After a few drinks you may feel like you pass right out to sleep, but time after time, we are shown how it's not the most restful sleep you can get!
A recent 2013 study published in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, showed that having alohol before bed can cause you to wake up during the night and not feel as rested when you wake up the next morning. The study further showed that alcohol consumption reduces the time it takes to fall asleep. So while it may help you for the first part of the sleep cycle, it doesn't help in the second part of your sleep cycle.
