The Institute of Medicine reports 7 - 8 hours is best for adults. One big problem was that the Journal of Preventative Medicine found that only about 1 in 3 get that; and it's even worse in kids.
Not only is the sleep time a factor but really it's the quality of sleep. Have you ever heard the phrase quality over quantity, well it definitely applies here.
A good example is me last night. I went to bed at a good time, thought I slept okay ( I noticed I had gotten up to go the bathroom a number of times). Once is normal but more than that it may effect your sleep. Whatever the reason, I got the hours time-wise but I clearly didn't sleep great because I was super tired when the alarm went off.
