Neck Pillows are very important. You have a normal c-curve in the neck; a neck pillow has a built in neck roll that. Maintains or improves that curve. Many people sleep on a very flat pillow, or maybe one that is too high and pushes their head up. When looking at someone's posture from the side, the ear lines up with the shoulder.
As you can guess, a flat pillow doesn't support a neck curve and can flatten the neck curve. The opposite is true for one that just too big. When you're on your back, it cranks your head forward.
The same holds true when you're on your side, you either tilt down too much or your head is tilted to the ceiling. It should be straight; if you look in the mirror you should be straight up and down.
