This was a recent email received from a chiropractic friend. Which pillow would be best for a patient suffering from neck pain due to disc bulges, facet arthritis, and annular tears?
The best pillow for neck pain from disc problems, degeneration, or poor alignment is the Arc4life Cervical Traction Neck Pillow.
One thing that needs to be done is to get the spine in alignment; this will help the discs stay in place and pull back bulges as much as possible.
Traction will also work well because it basically separates those spaces where the discs are, taking pressure off the nerves.
Also when one loses the appropriate neck curvature the ligament that runs on the anterior vertebral bodies tends to shorten and tighten. We need to stretch that back out to help the neck hold normal alignment with some neck traction as well.
This traction pillow can actually be used in two ways by a patient. It can be used for sleep as well as for gentle neck traction during the day.
For Sleep: Use either the support side of the pillow OR the traction side to sleep on. You can sleep on your side or on your back. For patients first starting out or for those in acute pain, I recommend sleeping on the support side. This is the side that is opposite the V. For some patients there may be a short break in period. Start by sleeping on the pillow at night for 5-10 minutes, on the support side. Then put the pillow away, and use another pillow that you are used to.l The next night, increase this time to 10-15 minutes. The night after 20-25 minutes. This allows your head and neck muscles to get used to sleeping one different contours of the arc4life traction pillow. Not everyone needs a break in period with this pillow by the way.
For Traction: For this, you are going to use the traction V Side of the pillow. Simply lay on your back, on the V Side of the pillow, face UP. Take deep breaths while you are laying on your back and try to relax as much as you can. you will feel a gentle pull on your neck - traction. Start by doing 5 minutes of traction a day. Slowly increase this to 10, 15, 20, 25 minutes of the neck traction. It is recommended that you set a timer. If you do well with this neck traction, think about purchasing an actual traction unit such as the posture pump cervical traction unit.
