Today I had a customer who received a pillow back in 2015 (its October 2017 present day), tell me that the pillow did not work for them. I asked, " did you use the pillow the whole night"- They answered YES.
Well that is not how we recommend you use the pillow in the beginning. The pillow in discussion was a cervical support pillow with a cervical roll. These type of pillows help to put the neck spine in the right position anatomically. Our neck curvature looks like a "C" curve. Many patients have a military neck or even a reverse kyphosis curve. That often means that their neck muscles such as the suboccipitals and paraspinal muscles are shortened. Sleeping on a new pillow is going to cause some major changes.
When using a cervical support pillow for the first time, your head and neck muscles will not be used to sleeping in this position. There is going to be some achiness in the beginning. Use a new pillow very gradually. Little by little your neck muscles will adapt. Start slowly and eventually you will wake up with no pain in the neck from sleeping on your new pillow. So for example use the cervical pillow for 5 minutes to start the first night. The next night 5-10 minutes. The night after that: 15-20 minutes.
